The first step towards becoming a medical billing & coding specialist is to find an accredited school that offers this training. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) are the two accrediting agencies most used for these programs. These same workers in Chicago and Cicero earned average wages of $36,206, amounts that are higher than the national average.
